Orindawoods Tennis and Shelter in Place

Hello Everyone,

With tonight’s “Shelter in Place” directive, the Orindawoods Tennis Club is basically closed. The Pro Shop will be closed as of today. All lessons are suspended for now. There will be no clinics or Junior Program for the length of the directive.

Orindawoods Tennis Club is an open campus, so I’m sure some of you will wish to go out and hit some balls. Get some exercise. We are a healthy lot. We need to move, we love the fresh air.

The directive says that outdoor exercise is OK, as long as you maintain social distancing of 6 feet. Tennis seems to qualify, but then there are the balls. Touched by everyone. There is no data that I know of about the survivability of the virus on tennis balls.

The power with which some of you hit, no virus could survive the flames produced, or the scorching speed and / or explosive impact.

And yet, all joking aside, it seems prudent to at least shut down all organized activities. If you do play, wash your hands before and after playing.

Personally, I feel that it is prudent to stop. If you have ever played in the late, low afternoon sun in the spring, and seen all the pollen explode off the ball every time you hit, producing a cloud all around you, it’s concerning at least. Again, I know no science on this, just my own precaution.

In these times, it is hard to distinguish between prudent and panic. For me, stopping seems prudent. But I plan to walk, get outside, exercise, take in some rays. And keep my distance.

We all want to get back to tennis as fast as we can and be safe. No one feels this more than Patric, Jen and I. I can’t wait to see you all back on the courts soon. We’ll have one heck of a tennis party!

Until then, we have the website with lots of past Tennis Newsletters and instruction to sharpen your game and keep you thinking tennis. It’s a good distraction, this tennis passion of ours.

The newsletters are posted under the “information” menu on the website. Third item down.

I’m sure I have contradicted myself over all these years, of learning, growing, studying and teaching you all the game. But there is valuable information there, if you are looking for a little reading. I may read some from 2004 and moan, or perhaps be pleasantly surprised.

Like you, I love Orindawoods. And tennis. And I wish you the best in these hard times.

Please follow the directive. The time for being cavalier is over. The math on this is compelling. If we can stop, even delay the spread, so many lives will be saved.

Stay safe, and we will get through this. Blessings to you all,
