Welcome to February
Good Morning Everyone,

Here is the latest from the 'Woods:

"Court Washing"
Mother Nature washed the courts again yesterday (Monday 1/30). The quality of service we are getting from this fine employee is simply beyond the call. In fact, we have requested with the utmost clarity and forthrightness that she cease and desist from these twice weekly cleanings, but alas, to no avail so far. In fact, rumor has it, she will be back again tomorrow for another massive court scrubbing. Stunningly amazing.

Still, the membership has been very accepting of this atmospheric phenomenon called winter, and has soldiered on to fit in tennis whenever they can schedule around our obsessive compulsive cleaning service. What can you do?

In fact, Mother Nature many be our greatest teacher, in that she is here to remind us that no matter how high mankind gets on their hobby horse, she lets us know who is really running the show. So next time your Treo or Blackberry crashes, realize that things are not all that bad, and you might even be able to play some tennis one of these days between cleanings.

Remember that we do post weather updates on the website (www.orindawoodstennis.com), and our phone message also has the latest court conditions. The Court Cam gives you a "live" view of the courts. That's me down there with the squeegee, by the way. I simply must remember to wave when it updates every 5 minutes.

As for predicting upcoming weather events ("Will the courts be dry by 10 a.m. tomorrow?"), my chrystal ball seems to be on the blink for the season. Bummer. I just can't seem to get a repair man down here to fix it.

By the way, here is a handy court cam tip: when the court cam is totally black, it is night time, and you should be in bed dreaming of backhands, and not wishing the court lights were still on so you could come down and play.

Club Directory
The new club directories are being mailed today, and should be in your hot little hands by the end of the week. As usual, the front of the directory consists of the people that live here in Orindawoods, and the second part contains those of you that are Tennis Associates. Remember to look both places before going into a total panic that the member you are trying to find no longer exists. As for any errors you may detect on your close perusing of your tennis buddies numbers, please let us know, and don't worry your little head one second longer, we print a new directory every ten years or so, so the number will only be wrong for a decade, give or take five years here or there.

As for useful information (as opposed to the literary manure), remember there is also a directory posted on line of the Tennis Associates that you can download as a pdf file.

Ball Machine Club
The current Ball Machine Club runs through the end of February, then it will be time to sign up for the next year. A yearly membership costs $100 for unlimited ball machine use, when the court is available. We keep the price low on this service because we want people to get out and work on their games. We do limit ball machine use on court 3 to non-prime time (after 11 a.m. until dark).

New Squeegees
We have some new blade squeegees made of white pvc piping. As much as we liked the old rusty blades that fall apart in your hands, we have decided to gradually retire these old warhorses, figuring that we have probably gotten just about all the useful life out of them by this time. The trick to the new blades is not to push down, but lightly run them over the puddles. Of course this is the exact opposite from the severe downward pressure required with the old blades. We also have several rollers for your squeegeeing pleasure. With all the court washing going on these days, I'm thinking of offering an exercise class featuring rolling the courts. It really is great exercise, and a great way to warm up on these cold, post storm mornings.

As I mentioned in the Club newsletter (posted on the website if you inadvertently trashed yours -- my feelings aren't hurt, honestly. No really, I'll get over it, don't worry about me, I'm a survivor...), remember that squeegees move water, they don't dry courts. Evaporation dries courts. You can squeegee until you are blue in the face, and you will get all the standing water off the court, but they still need Mother Nature to dry.

Court Usage
We are currently between USTA seasons, so there are not many matches on the weekends these days (we may have a playoff match coming up, TBD). There are some Spring League and BALL matches scheduled for during the week in February, so check the court calendar on the website or in the glass case for the latest scheduling action.

Tuesdays continue to be the toughest day to get a court reservation in the morning, with Thursdays and Sundays being the easiest. Pretty much every day the courts do get filled during morning prime time.

Door Combination
The keypad on the Clubhouse door takes the old combination, followed by the * key. If you don't remember the combination, be sure that you have used the bathroom before you come to play tennis. A second option would be to ask one of the staff, during business hours, and we will be happy to provide you with the urgently needed combination. We will be programming individual pass codes in the near future, so if you have a code that you would like to use, please lets us know. The codes must be 4 numbers long, no longer, so it doesn't take you too long to open the door and scramble into the bathroom. We strive to remain an accident free club.

Finally, with all this precipitaion, we can say that the skiing has been very good in Tahoe, but hush, don't tell anyone, I hate waiting in those weekend lift lines.

See you on the courts soon, and hopefully with a racquet in hand, and not a squeegee.
