Orindawoods Summer Action

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Summer! It took a while to get here this year, but here we are. There are a couple of things I want to bring to your attention:

Twilght Tennis June 30th

We have our first Twilight of the summer coming up on June 30th. We will play tennis from 5-7 pm, followed by a BBQed meal on the Club deck. You choose your main course (steak or chicken) and the we include a salad, beans, rolls and some dessert. What you need to bring is a beverage of your choice. This year, we will have John’s famous margaritas as well. We're livin' the dream!

The cost is $20 per person. To sign up, reply to this e-mail. If you have already signed up with John Bockman, you are good to go. The other thing I need to know is if you want steak or chicken. Please give us this information. Cash or check to "Orindawoods."

Other Twilight dates are 7/21, 8/11, 9/15 and October TBD.

Etiquette Reminders

Orindawoods is a shared use facility, which not only means we share, but also means we have to have socially acceptable behaviors that helps it all to run smoothly.

Our membership is one of the best I’ve ever seen in terms of getting along. Having said that, I would like to highlight a couple of areas we can all work on to keep things moving smoothly.

Court Crossings

This is a tricky one, but I get a lot of questions and comments about people’s behaviors surrounding court crossings. Orindawoods has a geography that causes some interesting walking paths, habits and issues.

Here we go. When is it OK to walk across a court? Well, yes, when no one is on it, is a good start.

What about if someone is playing? During change overs is another time. It’s not perfect, better to go around on the gravel paths outside the fences, but on a change over, some quick, respectful crossing is acceptable as long as it doesn’t delay / interfere with the play.

In general, we try not to interfere with a player’s concentration. Occasionally, things like an errant ball happen, but things we can control, like where we walk, should be respectful of other people. This goes for loud talking as well.

What about those gravel paths? Is it OK to walk on them when others are playing? Yes.

A players’ concentration should be free to focus on what is going on within the fences, but outside of the fences should be out of sight, out of mind. This is a reasonable expectation. So we can walk on the paths when people are playing. (If we waited for change overs, it would take us 20 mins. to get to the restroom).

Reservations

There are a couple of questions that come up around reservations.

Play on the court you reserved. If you have made a reservation, please play on that court. Maybe you reserved court 7, and court 5, which is your absolute favorite, is open. Please play on court 7. It really isn’t fair and respectful to hold two courts. People don’t know that you aren’t going to be using court 7. They think it is taken.

Please erase / cancel reservations you are not going to use. We have gotten a bit slack at this, but if you are not going to play on a court, please cancel your reservation and leave it available for someone else to play.

Memberships

The Club is getting close to full again in the summer months. There are 5-6 spots available. So this is a good time if you have a friend who wants to join to sign up. Orindawoods is such a wonderful place to play tennis, and of course we would want all of our friends to join us here as well! They can download an application on line or contact me for assistance. To join, they will need a check for the first month plus the initiation fee ($135 + $100 = $235). "I like this place, and willing could waste my time in it." -- Celia, As You Like It.

Once again, welcome to summer and we’ll see you on the courts soon!
